1. Introduction and Basic Information
London is divided into six zones with Zone 1 in Central London and Zone
6 in the outer suburbs
Central London is in Zone 1.
Greenwich is in Zone 2.
Avery Hill is in Zone 4.
Heathrow Airport is in Zone 6.
Gatwick and Stansted are outside the Zone system.
If travelling after 09:30 (week days) or all day at weekends we would
recommend the one day Travel Card.
This gives the freedom of London on tube, bus and train (Zones 1-2,
Zones 1-4, Zones 1-6).
This is the cheapest and most convenient way to travel around London.
Compare: one bus trip is Zone 1 (Central London) costs £1, one
bus trip outside Zone 1 costs
70 pence. A one day travel card for Zones 1-4 costs £4.10.
The easiest way to travel from Central London to Greenwich (the conference venue) and to Avery Hill (where most participants will stay) is by train. The train stations to go from:
Charing Cross, Waterloo East (Not Main, Not International), London Bridge
2. Reaching Avery Hill
If you are coming by car, please consult Avery Hill by Car. Parking places will be provided for participants at the Avery Hill Campus. We do not recommend that you use your car to go from Avery Hill to the conference site in Greenwich.
If you are not coming by car, please go to Section 2.1.
2.1. Reaching Charing Cross, Waterloo East or London Bridge
If you arrive at London Stansted Airport or London Gatwick Airport consult Railway Schedule and Planner. If you just want to reach Avery Hill and are not planning to travel a lot on the day of your arrival, buy a train ticket to Eltham (single r return quoting the day of your departure).
From London Stansted Airport take train to Liverpool Street Station. Make sure that your train ticket allows you to use tube (underground). Take underground Central Line to Bank (one stop), then switch Northern Line to London Bridge.
From London Gatwick Airport take train to London Bridge.
If you want to check-in first and to go to Central London on the same day, it makes sense to buy just a train ticket to Liverpool Street Station (from London Stansted Airport) or to London Bridge (from London Gatwick Airport), and then at the station to buy a travel card for Zones 1-4.
From London Heathrow Airport buy a one day travel card for Zones 1-6. Take tube Piccadilly Line to Leicester Square, (about 45 minutes) then change to Northern Line to Charing Cross (one stop).
If you arrive by train (Eurostar), you will arrive at Waterloo International. Walk to Waterloo East. Either buy a single train ticket to Eltham, or a travel card for Zones 1-4 (if you want to travel a lot on that day).
2.2. Reaching Eltham
Now you have reached one of the required train stations and have bought a right ticket. Regarding train times consult Railway Schedule and Planner. You need to take a train (usually the final destination is Dartford or Gravesend) via Bexleyheath. There are three lines from London to Dartford, you need only one: via Bexleyheath. You will arrive at Eltham in 25 minutes.
2.3. Reaching Avery Hill - The Final Leg
Next to Eltham Station you will find a bus stop. You need bus 286 or 132. The ride is about 5 minutes. If you have got a travel card, show it to the driver. If not, buy a ticket from the driver (70 p). Consult Avery Hill by Bus for more details.
Consult Local Map for further directions. You need to reach the University of Greenwich Hall of Residence located next to a rather pleasant park. The bus will bring you to the corner of Bexley Road and Avery Hill Road. Walk along Avery Hill Road (2 minutes), skip the first gate leading to the park, enter the second gate, contact the guard at the gate house. You either will be given the key to your room, or will be directed to the registration room.
2.4. Conclusion
If you have found Section 2 too complicated, you
can always take a taxi. From Heathrow it will cost you £60.
3. Reaching Greenwich
